I am a jazz pianist and vocalist, composer, songwriter, and teacher. While working for 21 years as an architectural designer (mostly in Carrboro), I played music on the side - jazz, R&B, rock, pop, reggae - with all sorts of groups in all sorts of places in and around North Carolina. After two years working in Hawai'i (and playing music), life brought me to Florida, where I completed the Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies in December 2007 and the Master of Arts degree in composition at Florida Atlantic University in May 2010. In addition to studying, performing, and composing, as a graduate assistant I taught class and applied piano, jazz history, jazz improvisation, and chamber jazz ensembles. I have been teaching privately since 2005, all ages, beginning through intermediate levels, ages 5 on up. In October 2016, I graduated from Music for People's Musicianship and Leadership Program (www.musicforpeople.org), deepening my improvisational and facilitation skills. It all has been, and continues to be, joyful. I love my musical life, and would welcome the opportunity to share some of it with you.

Gratefully, weekday afternoon/evening lesson spots are just about through January 2017! If you have some flexibility, late mornings/early afternoons are possible, and Saturday mornings as well. Give a shout and let's talk about how we can help bring more music into your life!
We share what we know, and we learn and rediscover along the way. My goal is to help others discover and nourish their particular voices, their unique way of expressing and interpreting their lives through the language of music.
Anyone interested in learning about how to play piano, or even just more about music in general, should meet Alison Weiner. I met Alison while she was finishing her graduate degree in music composition and performance at Florida Atlantic University. I am a motivated, but very novice musician. At each lesson Alison would share her passion and knowledge of music, not just how to play the piano. I looked forward to each lesson, which included her insight into music theory as it applied to each song. Since she relocated to North Carolina, Alison has remained available to help and answer my musical questions. While Alison lived in Florida, I had the opportunity to enjoy several of her live performances and highly recommend you attend one if you get the chance.
