SC40 Mary & Megan: The Travelin’ Mercies

  • Mahalo Arts, Inc. NC 27340 (map)

We are thrilled to restart up our Serenade Cozy series with a a fabulous duo from down the road in Hillsborough!

Mary Rocap and Megan Whitted, co-founders of the St. Matthew’s Women’s Singing Circle, decided last year to begin performing as a duo. They find strength in music and in singing, especially songs about journeying. They draw from the deep well of traditional spirituals, sacred heart hymns, contemporary songwriters, and their own originals. Whatever the source, they add their own spark. Many songs feature just their voices and are offered without accompaniment, others are supported by Megan’s keyboards and Mary’s guitar.

Mary has been a local music presence performing in the area for close to 50 years. She has had a long collaboration with Charlie Ebel and Lise Uyanik as part of the Mobile City Band as well as acoustic reincarnations with those band mates. She has been a backing vocalist for two Elvis Bands, but is primarily known for her own songwriting and singing. She was awarded a Fellowship for Songwriting from the NC Arts Council and has recorded five CDs. She is also an author, crafter, quilter, collagist, and baker.

Megan has led church music for over 25 years and serves as the organist at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Haw River. As a church musician, she has directed and collaborated in performances of Messiah, The Music Man, Carousel, and Guys and Dolls. She has spent the last ten years of her career as a music teacher at the Duke School in Durham where she organized a children's and youth chorus, collaborated with the NCCU Vocal Jazz Ensemble, and served as music director for Peter Pan, Into the Woods, Xanadu, and Shrek. She has a private studio in Hillsborough where she teaches piano, voice, and music appreciation.

AND, if this wasn’t enough, our great friend Gary Phillips will be offering some of his recent poems. Come join us!
